Wieder da / Back home

So, jetzt bin ich auch wieder aus Helsinki da. Ich muß sagen Helsinki ist eine sehr schöne Stadt, die einen teilweise ein wenig an Lübeck erinnert. Die Straßen sind sehr sauber, kennt man hier so gar nicht, es fahren überraschen wenig Autos herum und die Landschaft ist einfach irre schön! Überall kann man Felsen sehen (Finnland ist von Granit durchzogen) und insgesamt ist es... naturbelassener als hier. Ich meine wir haben auch viele Parks und viele Bäume - Hamburg ist ja eine der grünsten Städte Deutschlands - aber in Helsinki sehen die Parks weniger ordentlich aus. Viele Hügel, Bäume stehen wo sie halt gewachsen sind, die Wege gehen kreuz und quer und überall hat man halt wieder die Felsen und nichts ist wirklich starr begrenzt. Und was wir von Helsinkis Hafen gesehen haben ist bei weitem schöner als unser Hafen, nur mal so neben bei. Will ja Hamburg nicht schlecht machen, aber Helsinki fand ich doch beeindruckend schön.

I'm back from Helsinki. And I have to say Helsinki is a really beautiful city and it partially reminds me of Lübeck. The streets are very clean, something I haven't seen in a long time, only few cars are driving around and the landscape is just unbelievably beautiful! Everywhere rocks break through the ground (Finland is situated on a lot of granite) and all in all it's just... more natural than here. I mean we have parks and lots of trees - Hamburg is one of the greenest cities in Germany - but Helsinki's parks look a lot less ordered. Lots of hills, trees stand wherever they grew, paths meander and go this way and that, everywhere you have the aforementioned rocks and nothing seems rigidly confined or pressed into a shape. On a sidenote, what we've seen of Helsinki's harbour also is prettier than ours harbour. I don't want to talk badly about Hamburg but Helsinki was just impressingly beautiful.

Im Gegensatz zu Hamburg kommt man da wirklich überall mit Englisch weiter. Und auch kein geradebrechtes Englisch sondern wirklich gutes Englisch mit dem tollen finnischen Akzent. ;) Meine Finnischkenntnisse sind ja leider noch nicht groß genug um mich zu verständigen, aber wenigstens konnte ich teilweise schon verstehen was auf Schildern stand und hier und da ein paar gesprochene Satzfetzen und danke sagen kann ich auch. ;) Na, ich hoffe mal, daß es bis Dezember besser ist. Da wollen wir nämlich nochmal in den Norden des Landes. Zuerst nach Kemi und dann nach Rovaniemi. Aber schön kalt war es in Helsinki jetzt auch schon. Tagsüber knapp über 0°C und nachts dann Minusgrade. Geschneit hat es auch einmal ist aber leider nicht liegen geblieben. Jetzt wird es da gerade wohl wieder kälter und dann gibt's auch mehr Schnee, aber natürlich haben wir davon nichts mehr...

Contrary to Germany you really won't have any trouble at all with English. It seems that everyone speaks English quite fluently with that wonderful finnish accent. ;) Unfortunately my knowledge of the Finnish language is still not enough to try and make myself understood but at least I could already understand some of the signs and here and there I could understand some spoken Finnish and I can say thank you as well. ;) Well, I hope that it will have improved a lot until December. Then we want to go and see the north of the country. First Kemi and then off to Rovaniemi. It was already nicely cold in Helsinki though. During the day a little over 0°C and at night freezing temperatures. It did snow once but didn't stay unfortunately. Now it's supposed to get colder there there though and then there will probably also be more snow but that'll be too late for us...

Die Hochzeit war übrigens auch sehr schön. Wenn auch stressig. Morgens um 9:00 beim Friseur gewesen umd 12:00 wieder draußen. Noch schnell ein paar Sachen zusammengepackt für die Übernachtung im Hotel und dann leider doch später als geplant los... Irgendwie war es wieder nach 13:00 geworden. Dann schnell losgefahren, in Stau gekommen wegen einem dummen Fußballspiel (HSV gegen Dortmund, glaube ich), Umweg gefahren und natürlich erst gegen 14:30 dagewesen. Schnell umgezogen weil wir ja schon zu spät dran waren für den Fototermin (die Fotos bekommen wir erst in ca. 1 Woche), dann Fotos gemacht - und ich habe keine Ahnung wie schöne natürliche Fotos bei solch verkrampften unnatürlichen Haltungen heraukommen sollen, aber das werden wir ja sehen. Dann war es auch schon 16:00 und wir wurden reingeschickt für die Trauung. Die Standesbeamte hat mich erst nochmal nach der Aussprache meines Namens gefragt - die unter den Lesenden, die meinen Nachnamen kennen werden's verstehen ;) - hat dann ganz viele kitschige Sachen gesagt, wie es ja so üblich ist, aber das hat den Schwiegereltern und der Schwiegeroma immerhin gefallen. Dann war es schon Zeit ja zu sagen und schwups war man verheiratet. Man wird plötzlich von Haufenweise Leuten gedrückt, die man zum Teil nicht mal richtig kennt und dann gibt's auch schon Sekt. Auf leeren Magen. Weil natürlich hatte ich keine Zeit zum Essen gehabt. Das Essen gab es dann aber auch schon um 18:00 Uhr.

The wedding was very beautiful as well, by the way. Although very stressful. Hairdresser at 9:00 in the morning, 12:00 at noon back out. Quickly packed a few things for the night at the hotel and then we left for some reason quite a bit later than planned... Somehow the time had flown by and it was already 1 pm. We quickly drove off and got into heavy traffic because of a stupid soccer/football game (HSV vs. Dortmund, I think), had to make a detour because of that and of course didn't arrive at the hotel before 2:30 pm. We quickly changed since we were already late for the photo shoot (we'll get those pictures in about a week), got the pictures done - and I have no idea how beautiful natural pictures could result out of such tensed, cramped and unnatural poses but I guess we'll see. Then it was already 4 pm and we got sent in for the wedding ceremony. The registrar asked first asked how to pronounce my name - for all of those of you that know my surname that won't be overly surprising ;) - said a lot of tacky things as is custom but the partens in law and grandmother in law liked it. Then it was already time to say yes and bam, we were married. All of a sudden you get hugged by lots of people some of which you hardly know and then you already get a glas of sparkling wine. On an empty stomach. Of course I hadn't had any time to eat. But the food was already served at 6pm.

Ich glaube ich habe an dem Abend auch noch vier Gläser Rotwein und zwei Alsterwasser getrunken... Nach dem vierten Glas Wein sind dann diese Bilder hier entstanden. ;) In Lila und Schwarz bin ich zu sehen. Auf der einen Seite von mir meine Trauzeugin und Cousine Gabi, auf meiner anderen Seite mein Mann Markus und auf dessen anderer Seite Sascha, sein Trauzeuge. Auf dem zweiten Bild ist dann auch noch der Brautvater (der älteste von allen) und meine Schwiegereltern zu sehen. Und nein, Markus und ich sind nicht wirklich riesig groß, alle anderen sind nur ein wenig abgebrochen. ;)

I think I had about 4 glasses of red wine and two glasses of Alsterwasser (half beer, half Sprite, northern Germany's "national drink", the southerners have Radler wich is pretty much the same actually ;) ) that evening... After the fourth glas of red wine these pictures were taken. ;) The one in purple and black is me. On my one side is my wedding witness and cousin Gabi, on my other side my husband Markus and on his other side Sascha, his wedding witness. On the second picture you can also see the bride's father (the oldest of them all) and my parents in law. And no, Markus and I aren't horribly tall, everyone else is just really short. ;)

War auch ganz schön warm in dem Raum. Bin immer mal wieder raus gegangen wo es so schön kühl war. War ja dann doch nicht mehr richtig krank geworden. Dafür hatte ich aber am Montag dann eine leichte Halsentzündung... Na ja, man kann ja nicht alles haben. ;)

It was quite warm in that room. I went outside a couple of times where it was nicely cool. I hadn't gotten sick after all. But on monday I had a bit of a sore throat... I suppose, one can't have everything. ;)

Der Abend war auf jeden Fall toll. Konnte mich endlich mal wieder länger mit allen meinen Verwandten aus dem Ruhrpott unterhalten, das Essen war klasse und wir hatten alle viel Spaß. Nur eines verstehe ich nicht so ganz. Warum schenkt man einer Braut, die ja eh schon mit einem Brautstrauß kommen wird, dann auch noch Blumen??? Ich bin einem Strauß angekommen und mit 5 Sträußen und einem Blumentopf am nächsten Tag wieder abgefahren! Und alle wußten, das wir in der nächsten Woche nach Finnland wollten. Und dann waren es auch noch alles Sträuße, die schön viel Farn- bzw. Grasartiges Grünzeug drin hatten und die bei uns in der Wohnung keine fünf Minuten heil und aufrecht stehen bleiben. Unsere Katzen halten das nämlich für Katzengras... Und haben auch noch nicht verstanden, daß sie das Zeug gar nicht vertragen.

Anyway, the evening was great. I finally got to talk a bit longer to my family from the Ruhr area, the food was great and everyone had a lot of fun. There is just one thing, I don't get. Brides carry bridal bouquet. Why do people then give a bride flowers??? I came with one bouquet and left with five and one pot of flowers! And everyone knew we would leave for Finland in the next week. And of course there was lots of farn and gras like things in the bouquets and bouquets like that don't survive unscathed and upright for more than five minutes in our home. Our cats think that that's cat grass... And they don't understand that their little tummys just won't agree with it...

So, ich habe aber auch noch was Strickthematisches zu erzählen. Ich habe nämlich ein neues Paar Socken angefangen. Mein erstes Paar Monkeys in Tausendschön's Elfenspiegel. Die Wolle macht richtig Spaß zu stricken und dabei kann ich Pink nicht leiden. :)

I do have something knitting related to tell. I have started a new pair of socks. My first pair of monkey socks cast on in Tausendschön's Elfenspiegel. This yarn is a lot of fun to knit and I don't even like pink! :)
